Kununurra District

High School

The $42.1m upgrade of the Kununurra District High School a key element of the East Kimberley Development Package for the expansion of the Ord River Irrigation Scheme is required to provide modern facilities structured to improve attendance and education outcomes of students.
Embedded in a landscape of red rock , spear grass and Boab trees. Kununurra is a relatively new town, developed in the late sixties to serve the Ord River Irrigation Scheme. It is the regional hub of the East Kimberley and home to many of the traditional owners of the country in which it sits. The built response to this challenging environment has generally, and continues to be, defensive, further exacerbating the sense of isolation and fostering insularity within the community.
Six new buildings, a canteen, secondary block, sports hall, two primary blocks and a joint use library have been strategically located to support the pedagogical model and encourage a greater sense of community engagement within the school and the community.
Underpinned by an economy of means, colourful light weight materials have been used to realise simple dynamic forms designed and placed to engage with and celebrate the cultural and environmental particulars of place and community.
